In this version we’ve reviewed the watched folder system to see that it correctly supports Windows 7 both 32 and 64 bit. Additional keyboard support has been added where encountered for simple functions along with other minor enhancements and fixes related to the installer system.

  • 64-bit support
  • Testing on Windows 7, 64-bit and 32-bit
  • SQLite library compiled within the application
  • Clean and tested installer/uninstaller.
  • Vestiges of some testing dialogs from beta 2 have been removed.
  • The context menu now brings the “Add to Benubird” options into the foreground.

Well, there’s nothing built-into the user interface at the moment — however, I can tell you the location of the Benubird database file  and you can copy this into your archive for safe keeping:

C:\Users\< username>\AppData\Roaming\Benubird\Benubird.db (Windows Vista | Windows 7)
C:\Documents and Settings\< username>\Application Data\Benubird\Benubird.db (Windows XP)

Now if you are using the repository and wish to back this up then the default location for this is as follows:

C:\Users\< username>\AppData\Roaming\Benubird\Repository (Windows Vista | Windows 7)
C:\Documents and Settings\< username>\Application Data\Benubird\Repository (Windows XP)

However – note that it is possible for you to change this within Benubird, so be sure to make sure you are backing up the correct location!

This is a much requested feature which allows you to combine your existing Windows Explorer file structure with Benubird’s data management.

The new version can be downloaded online and as with the previous version, it’s completely free!

We know that a lot of people have been looking forward to this new version with direct linking, so we’d love to hear your feedback on the forum about this latest release.

Yes, we’re powering up Benubird to really focus on PDF (mostly by way of using our sophisticated Quick PDF Library).

Therefore, we’ve made some small changes to Benubird such as in-built PDF Preview, moveable repository/library and PDF metadata to file metadata syncing.  And whilst we work behind-the-scenes on bolting on an even greater range of PDF features and options, we’re making the current version freeware.

We’d like to see you drop by the forum and chat with the other users. So please, feel free to download and install Benubird PDF on as many computers as you like …

This new version of Benubird Pro introduces a number of new features, bug fixes and usability improvements. The full list of new features is included here:

  • Convert any file that can be printed to PDF from within Benubird Pro by right-clicking on it and selecting ‘Convert to PDF’.
  • Convert any file that can be printed to PDF and add it to Benubird Pro automatically in Windows Explorer by right-clicking on it and selecting ‘Add to Benubird Pro as PDF’.
  • Use the ‘Add to Benubird Pro as PDF’ printer driver to create PDFs from any windows application that supports printing.
  • Add, edit or remove properties from PDF files effortlessly. Edit the Title, Author, Subject and Keywords property fields of PDFs.
  • All files added to Benubird Pro are now automatically added to a file repository. This protects files from being accidentally moved or deleted.
  • Files that are opened from Benubird Pro are moved from the file repository to the workspace. This ensures that when you edit a file you have a chance to wind back the changes by choosing not to re-commit the file to the file repository.
  • When exporting fields from Benubird Pro or opening files in the workspace the metadata associated with that file in Benubird Pro is written directly to the file (if that file type supports metadata).

It’s a paid subscription service so we can’t share the entire article with you, but here’s what the writer, Peter Moon, had to say about Benubird Pro specifically:

Take document properties, for instance. A team that learns what they are and uses them carefully can turn a Word jumble into a knowledge base. They tag files with data about authors, subjects, dates and keywords. Using a slick, inexpensive file management tool called Benubird from www.debenu.com, document properties allow a Word library to be organised, searched, arranged into virtual folders, monitored for additions and archived. But all depends on sensible use of an existing Word feature.

Peter really hit the nail on the head. Microsoft really underutilized document properties on the Windows platform. Document properties instantly make your files more intelligent, making it easier to manage them and find them in the future. Most importantly it means that you don’t have to rely a messy and out-dated folder hierarchy to organize files.
