Featured Developer: Systematic Marketing

SMXi LogoFeatured Developers are responding to fascinating PDF problems by building outstanding, original solutions using Quick PDF Library. Each month, this section highlights how one such innovator has identified and achieved its organizational goals with an elegant PDF-based solution.

This month’s Quick PDF Library Featured Developer is Russell Weetch from Systematic Marketing.

We asked a few key questions and the answers are as follows.

1. Describe what the business you work in does and the industry it is in.

Systematic Marketing develops marketing and marketing support systems for a wide range of clients, which include both non-profit charitable organizations and commercial enterprises – the very small to the very large.

2. What is the name of the application that uses Quick PDF Library and what does it do?

We use Quick PDF in several applications. The simplest is the production of a certificate for charitable giving in for our SMXi Patron gifting web module. The most complex is in our SMXi Element application.

SMXi Element provides multi venue organizations the ability to allow their branches to have access to a huge range of customizable marketing collateral – from posters, displays and brochures to direct mail, email marketing, and SMS marketing – while the head office marketing team is able to keep control over style and branding.

3. Specifically, how Debenuis Quick PDF Library used in the application?

In SMXi Element pdf files are used for all point of sale and direct mail production. The pdf files are in a huge range of sizes from less than A6 to large display panels. They are marked up with form fields which are holding positions for customized text and images. The files are loaded into a desktop application (part of a multi-tier application) which identifies the fields and enables the designer to specify the type of field they are, default values, selectable options and layout specifications that can’t be held in the field definition on the PDF. The PDF is then loaded up onto the server as both a low-resolution version and high-resolution version.

The end user accesses the marketing asset library through a website and selects the item they want to produce. They then get a form that enables them to enter the text they want to use (sometimes plain text, sometimes HTML), select images from the media library and so on. Certain items allow the user to choose from lists of pdf files to create duplex or multi-page documents. The web application then using Quick PDF Library to create a completed version by combining files into multipage documents, draw images and write text. This is then rendered to a jpeg for them to view. This view uses the low res version for speed.

Once submitted and approved the production module uses the high res version to create the final print ready file. If it is a direct mail piece then a mail merge is also carried out using Quick PDF Library.

Although fields are used in the layout, they are just place and style holders as Quick PDF Library enable us to use this data and other formatting information held about the customization to offer all the functionality available in writing to the canvas layers.

4. What do you think of Quick PDF Library?

Without the Quick PDF Library, the additional work needed to provide this level of integration would have been considerable and probably made the project too costly. It is a great piece of software to work with and just keeps getting better.

That concludes the first ever Quick PDF Library Featured Developer. A big thank you and congratulations to Russell and his team from Systematic Marketing for the interview.
