ARTS Link Checker is an Adobe® Acrobat® plug-in for checking and fixing dead links. The tool helps you identify and correct broken links — caused when modifying large collections of PDF documents — and reports on potential problems.

Links to external files are checked to ensure that the file exists and is in the proper location. It automates the painstaking task of checking action and additional action keys for validity. ARTS Link Checker includes a number of different methods to check and report on your links and includes a pre-defined reporting function that can list the dead links within a PDF document. It also has menu options to count the number of links and to set links in a document to the same color as a selected link.

Kinds of actions checked

ARTS Link Checker checks action and additional action keys for validity. GoTo links are checked to make sure that they lead somewhere in the document. GoToR links are checked to make sure the destination file exists, and that a valid page is selected in the destination file. Named destinations are checked to make sure they exist. This will find the most insidious kind of broken link, because Adobe Acrobat will not report an error if you click on a GoToR link that uses a named destination that does not exist. Clicking on such a link will open the proper file to page 1, without reporting an error, even though the named destination was probably supposed to lead to a different page. ARTS Link Checker will catch these kinds of broken links! ARTS Link Checker includes different methods to check and report on your links:

  • Check for dead links from beginning
  • Find next page with dead links
  • Display all page numbers with dead links
  • Flash dead links on this page
  • Report on all bad actions
  • Report on bad document bookmarks
  • Report on external dependencies
  • Report on selected link
  • Make all link or text annotations like this one
  • Count links in doc
  • Count links in batch
  • Display all page numbers with dead links
  • “Display all page numbers with dead links” will check the entire document and display a list of page numbers of pages that contain broken links.

Broken links

Selecting “Check for dead links from beginning” will search your PDF document for broken links. If a page with bad links is found, the page is displayed, and the broken links are flashed for a few seconds. “Find next page with dead links” will continue searching for the next page that has dead links. “Flash dead links on this page” is useful for checking for dead links on the current page only, or in case you want the bad links to flash again because you missed them the first time.

Report on external dependencies

Select “Report on external dependencies” to create a PDF file with text that lists all files and URL’s (web and mailto) referenced by the file.

Report on bad document bookmarks

“Report on bad document bookmarks” will create a PDF file that contains a text listing of all of the bookmarks that are broken.

Report on a selected link or annotation

Select the ARTS Link Checker tool and click once to select a link. Then select “ARTS Link Checker -> Report on selected link” to create a PDF file that shows the technical detail of a link. If the link is broken, it will show you why the link is broken. For those with deep technical knowledge of the PDF format, the report also includes a listing of the contents of the link annotation’s dictionary.

Make all link or text annotations like this one

First, choose the “ARTS Link Checker” tool and then select a link or a text annotation. Next, you can use “Make all link or text annotations like this one” to take the attributes of the currently selected item and copy it throughout either the current document or all of the documents in a selected folder. The attributes you can select to copy include the highlight style, frame width, frame dash style, and frame color of a link. For a text annotation, you can copy the color attribute.

Counting links in a singular file or in batch

“Count links in doc” will count the number of links, widgets, and bookmarks in a document, along with a count of the number of each that contains broken actions. “Count links in batch” will create a PDF file that lists the counts for all of the PDF files in a selected folder, with an option to also check in subfolders.
